Why Study in the UK?

This was one question I asked myself many years ago before filling my first application form. And I have never regretted it. I am Nigerian by Birth and it took me a while before making my mind up. I had offers from some top universities in Europe where the tuition was completely free, but I eventually choose the UK. Here are the six reasons why I think you should study in the UK

1). A great International reputation
UK qualifications are respected and recognized throughout the world by employers, governments and top universities for its academic strength. A UK degree on your CV will certainly put you above your peers when you return home. As a matter of fact, notable people like Francis Bacon , Charles Darwin, Alan Turing, Isaac Newton , who discovered the laws of motion; Joseph Thomson who discovered the electron; James Maxwell who unified electricity and magnetism into electromagnetism, and Alexander Graham who invented of the telephone were all products of British education.

2). A great opportunity to improve your English
Studying in the UK is a great way to improve your English. Everyday you will get an opportunity to listen, learn and practice English by speaking with native speakers. English is the primary language of more than 400 million people in the world and it is essential in science, technology, and economics. As a matter of fact, it has been called the language of international business. The ability to speak fluent English is expedient for jobs in the US, Canada and Australia.

3) A Safe place to Live
The UK is a safe to live. There are 4.2 million closed circuit television camera in Britain; which translates to one per every 14 persons. The police do not carry guns and there is strict control on the possession of firearms. The country is not located near a plate boundary or mantle hot spots, hence it does not suffer from active volcanoes and large earthquakes as you would find in many other countries. Compared to Africa and the tropics there are very few dangerous animals, insects and creeping snakes. It has been reported that adders are the only venomous snakes found in Britain!

4) Work while you Study
Studying in the UK is cheaper than studying in America. The UK government allows students to work outside the campus and even allow their spouses to work, something that American universities do not permit.

The national minimum wage for workers aged 21 and over is currently £6.08. As long as you are not extremely selective you should easily find a part-time student job when you arrive. Students are allowed to work 20 hours per week during term time and full time during the university holidays. Working can be a great way to relieve financial pressure and gain invaluable work experience!

5) A Multicultural Place
The multicultural ambience of London and Britain is one of the reasons many international students love to study in Britain. You will find a sizeable population of Jamaicans, Nigerians, Chinese, Ghanians, Asian, Greeks, Turkish and various other nationalities in the UK. The London boroughs (of Bromley, Bexley, Lewishan, Croydon, kingston , Lambeth, Greenwich and Wandsworth) is houses the largest Nigerian community in the UK. Brixton is home to a larger number of Afro-Caribbean inhabitants while East End houses a large number of Bengali population.

6) A Great Tourist Destination
The UK is a great tourist destination and travellers have named London as the world’s best destination of 2012.
